HOW IT ALL STARTED -- FRANKLIN NO. 10

The cities newest fire fighting organization was formed after two unsuccessful efforts had been made to place a fire company in the West End of the city. At their first preliminary meeting, which was held on November 30, 1900, 30 citizens were present. At the second meeting, forty one people attended and an organization was effected and the name FRANKLIN was selected. The company was chartered February 22, 1901, with 101 active members, and went into service May 21, 1901. On February 7, 1902, they numbered 120 active and 110 contributing members. On September 17, 1901 the new $1700 chemical engine and hose wagon arrived and one year later, September 13, 1902, they moved into their new present quarters, costing $11,600 at 14th and Turner Streets. The company had a 1100 pound alarm bell which is now on display in West Park. In 1987 the city sold the Franklin engine house and was made into apartments in 1988. The Franklin Home Association, which is the social organization affiliated with the Franklin Fire Company No. 10, was housed in the building next to Franklin engine house, where it resides to this day and celebrated its' 100 anniversary in 2001.
